Australians want services not tax cuts from Budget
"To create a fairer Australia the Treasure should be putting better
government services and initiatives ahead of tax cuts in this year's
budget" said Senator Rachel Siewert today.
Senator Siewert welcomed the release today of ACOSS's A Fairer
Australia: Recommendations for the Federal Budget 2007-08
"The polls show that ordinary Australians want to see the government
invest in a fairer future," said Senator Siewert.
"Now more than ever we need to be investing the benefits of out strong
economy in building a better future for all Australians"
"Creating incentives to encourage private investment in low cost rental
housing in areas of greatest need is a simple way in which the
Government could tackle the crisis in affordable housing," said Senator
Siewert.
"Developing a national anti-poverty plan and addressing Indigenous
disadvantage should be major priorities for this year's budget" she
said.
"The Greens support the call for a 10 year plan to eliminate over
crowding in Indigenous housing to bring it up to an acceptable
standard."
"We should also bring Aboriginal access to primary health care up to
standard. The Government needs to devote at least 400 million a year to
address the existing gap," concluded Senator Siewert.
