Make Stolen Uranium Probe Public

Greens MLC Mark Parnell has called for the results of the investigation
into the discovery of illegal uranium samples at the construction camp
for the Olympic Dam mine to be made public.

"While Mike Rann is out being Lawrence of Arabia spruiking the benefits
of open slather uranium mining, our police our running around Roxby
Downs looking for the culprit.

"If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable.

"This report is deeply disturbing and highlights why uranium is not just
like any other fuel - this wouldn't be a story if all that was
discovered was a bucket of coal or a piece from a wind turbine. Products
of the nuclear cycle in the wrong hands can potentially end up in
weapons.

"If serious breaches can occur even here in South Australia, what other
breaches could take place in other countries with less stringent
standards that use our uranium, such as China," Mr Parnell said.

Under the terms of the 1982 Roxby Downs Indenture Act, the Roxby Downs
mine is not subject to Freedom of Information legislation.

"This report highlights the need for greater openness and transparency
at Roxby Downs. Without checks and balances, such as access to FoI, we
must rely on the assurances of the government that everything is hunky
dory - yet if breaches like this can occur, plainly it's not.

"I am calling on the government to be open with the South Australian
people.

"Otherwise, the Premier's comparison of South Australia to Saudi Arabia
starts to take on more worrying tones," he said.
