Global warming will mean Hot Cross Bilbies
Chocolate Easter Bilbies may be the closest children will get to a real
Bilby in the future because of global warming, Greens Senator Kerry
Nettle said today.
Bilbies a popular native Australian substitute for the Easter Bunny are
endangered by climate change.
"Before European settlement bilbies were in 70% of the mainland, but now
they are limited to small niches in Queensland, the Northern Territory
and Western Australia, areas now threatened by global warming."
"We know because of the IPCC report released this weekend that bushfires
and droughts will threaten food sources and shelter for animals like the
bilby."
"The bilby is only one of the many species threatened by dangerous
climate change. Up to million plants and animals could become extinct by
the middle of the century."
"Easter is also an opportunity for families to consider the threat to
their children's future and how we can all take action to prevent global
warming."
"I hope John Howard and Kevin Rudd take the opportunity to reconsider
their uncritical support for the coal industry and make the switch to
solar and wind."
