Tasmania will cop big hit from climate change - Brown
Tasmania is facing a big hit from climate change and the state
government must urgently review its planning and energy strategies,
Greens leader Senator Bob Brown said in Hobart today.
'The IPCC report says 711,000 homes and businesses are at risk from a
possible 6 metre sea level rise. That would put the sea up to the first
floor windows in Salamanca Place, leave Launceston flood levies useless
and permanently flood tens of thousands of coastal homes and businesses.
Yet the Lennon government is burning forests and wants a pulp mill to
keep that going for at least 20 to 30 years," Senator Brown said.
"Tasmania's fisheries, farmlands and alpine areas are already feeling
the impact of heating. Many of our species face extinction," Senator
Brown said.
