Forest burn pall over Hobart

Greens Leader Bob Brown says the huge pall of smoke which blew over
Hobart this evening is coming from deliberately lit forest regeneration
burns.

"Masive amounts of greenhouse gases and particulate matter are being
injected into the atmosphere above Tasmania through this atmospheric
vandalism," Senator Brown said.

"That pollution will remain up there for centuries, worsening global
warming for generations of people yet to come. Yet the culprits pay
nothing. As Sir Nicholas Stern has commented, this is part of the worst
market failure in human history. If Forestry Tasmania and Gunns had to
pay for the health and economic impact of these burns, as they should,
they would be out of business," Senator Brown said.
