Howard's double-standard on Kokoda
- Brown calls for Burrup heritage to be saved too
The Prime Minister is practising a double-standard on Australia's
national heritage, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
"On the one hand he is demanding Papua New Guinea curtail goldmining
near the Kokoda Track because of its iconic significance for Australia.
On the other hand he is giving the go-ahead for destruction of more of
the world heritage value Aboriginal rock art realm on Western
Australia's Burrup Peninsula," Senator Brown said.
"The tragedy is that industrial development at Burrup can be installed
nearby without damaging one of the nation's greatest heritage assets."
"BHP opted to go up the coast to Onslow for industrial expansion. Down
the coast, the Maitland industrial site remains empty. Why is Woodside
Petroleum not moving there?" Senator Brown asked.
"Both heritage areas need protecting. But it is hypocritical for John
Howard to hector Papua New Guinea's prime minister. He is not prepared
to take the same action at home which he demands Michael Somare take in
Papua New Guinea," Senator Brown said.
