What are they good for?

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey drew Canberra school communities' attention to
the failure of the ACT Labor backbenchers to stand up and be counted in
the debate on her School Closure Moratorium Bill today.

"It is extraordinary that not one Labor backbencher was prepared to
speak in the debate" Dr Foskey said today.

 "Have they been out and about listening to their community, seeming to
care, and suggesting they will fight for a select few of the schools
under threat?"

 "When push came to shove in the Legislative Assembly, only the
Education  Minister and the Chief Minister spoke to my Bill, while every
Labor Member passively toed the party line."

"It must be difficult to vote against a personal belief in social
justice and concern for communities. Yet that is what Mr Gentleman, Ms
MacDonald, Ms Porter and Mr Berry have chosen."

" It is interesting to note that since the advent of majority government
at Parliament House, Coalition backbenchers have shown growing courage
and independence." 
 
"Sadly, we don't see the same courage or independence from the Labor
backbench in the Assembly" Dr Foskey said.
