Cheltenham land status claims must be made public

After attending the Save Cheltenham Park rally in Woodville Town Hall
last night, Greens MLC, Mark Parnell has called on Labor MPs Rod Sawford
and Jay Weatherill to prove their competing claims over the original
status of the race course.

"The question that needs to be answered is: Was it sold to the Racing
Club or bequeathed in a will to the people for open space?" he said.

Both MPs provided different accounts to a heated and emotional public
meeting and each accused the other of pedalling mis-information.

"The best way to progress the public debate over the future of
Cheltenham is for both Rod Sawford and Jay Weatherill to publish the
documents so the public can see who is telling the truth," Mark Parnell
said.

The Greens also called on the State Government to postpone the current
rezoning plans for the adjoining former Sheridan site so that planning
for the whole area can happen in an integrated way. Public consultation
on the Sheridan site rezoning closes on 27th September.

"It's just crazy that we have got two separate parcels of land side by
side that are each slated for a mix of housing and open space. Surely,
for a planning decision as important as this, the two parcels of land
should be considered together. There is no doubt the open space outcome
of the Sheridan site will affect the adjacent Racecourse sale.

"It makes more sense to consider the whole area for its development
potential rather than simply following title boundaries," he said.
