Death Of Green Activist Highlights Concern About Harassment of Environmentalists

NSW Greens MPs have paid tribute to environmental activist Doris Owens, who was found dead in her home at Swanhaven on Tuesday.

Commenting on media reports this morning that police are treating her death as suspicious, the three NSW State Greens MPs Sylvia Hale, Lee Rhiannon and Ian Cohen also expressed concern that Ms Owens death may have been connected to her environmental activities.

“Doris had been subjected to threats and harassment in the past as a result of her environmental activism,” said Sylvia Hale.

“It is important that there is a full investigation to determine if she was the victim of an attack,” she said.

“People should be able to protest about environmental issues without being subject to harassment and threats,” said Ian Cohen.

“As a community we should be making it clear that bullying of community activists is completely unacceptable,” he said.

Lee Rhiannon paid tribute to Ms Owens long-term environmental commitment.

“Doris was someone who believed fervently in looking after the environment and was willing to back up her beliefs with her time and her efforts,” she said.
