MEDIA RELEASE - 13 September 2006

Iemma salutes Beazley’s popularist flag

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon says Premier Iemma’s public support for Opposition Leader Kim Beazley’s proposal for a values declaration was a sign of weak leadership at a time when race relations could turn ugly in New South Wales.

“Premier Iemma has chosen wedge politics over ethical leadership, playing the race card at a time when unity and tolerance should come to the fore,” Ms Rhiannon said.

“The Premier’s support for this tawdry proposal shows his attention is firmly fixed on using racism to win votes, not on building a state where people reject bigotry in all forms.

“Premier Iemma would have been better to keep his mouth shut, but instead has added fuel to a fire that both the major parties are keen to keep burning,” Ms Rhiannon said.
