NSW Government must move on private school principals salary secrecy
Media Release: 12 September 2006
It is time that private schools were forced to release details of
their principals' salary packages according to Greens NSW Education
spokesperson, John Kaye.
Commenting on a story in today's Sydney Morning Herald (page 3), Dr
Kaye said: "Private schools in NSW receive more than $2 billion in
federal and state subsidies each year. The public has a right to know
how this money is being spent, including principals' salaries.
"Dredging out arguments about privacy and the acrimony of past
debates does not excuse private schools from their obligation to be
publicly accountable.
"This veil of secrecy is bad policy. As long as governments continue
to pour money into private schools, they should be open to public scrutiny.
"The NSW state government has an obligation to lift the lid on the
secrecy that surrounds private school finances. Without accurate data
on how the state's funding is being spent, there is a real risk that
some of the publics' money is being squandered on creating massive
salary differentials between principals in private and government
schools," Dr Kaye said.
