*Greens call for no bushland clearing for new Police Academy*
The Greens call on the state government to confirm that remnant bushland
habitat will not be cleared for the proposed Police Academy at Wacol
announced by the Premier and Minister Spence yesterday.
Greens candidate for Mount Ommaney, Jos Hall said, "I support calls from
local community groups for remnant bushland on state government lands at
Wacol to be protected.
"The government needs to assure the community that the Police Academy
proposal will not impact on the remnant bushland," said Ms Hall.
Ms Hall called on the state government to confirm it will abide by
written commitments from the state government to Brisbane City Council
in the late 1990s that the state government would clear no further
remnant bushland in this Wacol precinct.
"The community is aware of these commitments which I understand were
made at the time the government cleared bushland for the Youth Detention
Centre, contrary to the intents of Brisbane City Council's land use
planning," said Ms Hall.
"It is unfortunate that the state government announced the new academy
without giving details of the land area involved and ignoring advice to
interested community groups," said Ms Hall.
Ms Hall said that Wacol is the last area in Brisbane with a population
of Eastern Grey Kangaroos.
"These remnant bushland linkages between the river and the protected
endangered regional ecosystem at Pooh Corner are important for wildlife
and biodiversity protection," added Ms Hall.
Ms Hall called for public consultation on the environmental and social
impacts, including engagement with neighbouring residents and local
community groups.
