*Both Majors Short Sighted on Moreton Bay*
The Greens have expressed disappointment today that both major parties
have opted for short term electoral benefit over long term environmental
and economic interests by failing to commit to no go zones in Moreton Bay.
Greens lead spokesperson Juanita Wheeler described the failure of the
major parties to commit to no take zones as ignorant, politically
motivated and short sighted.
“The major parties clearly have a three day planning horizon extending
to Election Day rather than the 20 or 30 year planning horizon we should
expect of responsible governments,” Ms Wheeler said.
The Greens point to the recently released study showing greatly
increased fish stocks in the 'green' no-take zones of the Great Barrier
Reef as evidence that these zones can be astonishingly successful in
maintaining fish stocks whereas simply allowing unrestrained fishing
will inevitably see those stocks decline.
“The James Cook University study clearly shows that no take zones will
ensure the ongoing sustainability of the environment, recreational
fishing and commercial fishing into the future – something I would have
thought that every party would support,” Ms Wheeler said.
"While we are disappointed by the lack of vision from the major parties,
this is clearly another example why people who are concerned about being
able to take their children and grandchildren to enjoy Moreton Bay in
10, 20 or 30 years time should be voting Green.”
