Greens look like winning cooling off period for ex-Ministers

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon has initiated amendments in Parliament to require the government enact legislation that includes a cooling off period for ex-Ministers before they take up private sector jobs.

“The Coalition and Cross Bench have indicated they will support the Greens' amendment," Ms Rhiannon said.

"The amendment requires that the government initiate legislation that adopts ICAC’s 2004 recommendations to corruption-proof this area, including a clear cooling off period and rules than can be enforced.

“As a result the government acted to put off a vote in the Legislative Council to give them time to find ways to save face.

“The government’s bankrupt model has no cooling off period and no penalties and ignores almost all of ICAC’s recommendations.

“I was pleased to hear that the Coalition and a majority of the Cross Bench are considering supporting my amendment.

“Premier Iemma must now admit that the tide has turned and he needs to introduce legislation to govern this important area,” Ms Rhiannon said.
