Government blocks cluster bomb motion

The Government today opposed Greens Leader Bob Brown's motion reading:

That the Senate deplores the manufacture, sale and use
of cluster bombs like those now deployed in Lebanon

On the same day, the Government tabled its agreement to United Nations
Protocol V on Explosive Remnants of War aiming to help ensure civilian
are not left exposed to unexploded bombs.

"Cluster bombs are obscene. They specifically target little kids who
mistake them for toys," Senator Brown said.

"The news stories indicate the cluster bombs deployed in Lebanon by
Israel came from America. Wherever they came from, they are unpardonably
evil and the Government should have supported this motion," said Senator
Brown.
