*QLD GREENS MEDIA RELEASE
Sunday 3^rd September 2006*
*Greens join ‘Flotilla for Water’*
The Greens will join forces with the Save the Mary River Coordinating
Group and concerned Queenslanders in a flotilla for water on the
Brisbane River today.
The event will commence at 10:15am with a range of speakers supporting
the event’s theme ‘Smart alternatives to building new dams’.
Greens lead spokesperson, Juanita Wheeler, said it was distressing to
Mary River residents that while residents of Brisbane are celebrating
the Brisbane River as the life force of our city via the Riverfestival,
the residents of the Mary River Valley are fighting for their river’s
survival.
“The Mary River is just as vital to the people of the Mary River Valley
as the Brisbane River is to the people of Brisbane, and Queenslanders
must acknowledge this and vote against the dams this Saturday,” Ms
Wheeler said.
Ms Wheeler said the most tragic aspect of the dams plan is that it is
completely unnecessary.
“An investment now in water recycling, demand management and rainwater
tanks will provide us with adequate water to meet our needs, without
destroying valuable agricultural land, displacing families or sending
endangered species hurtling towards extinction.”

The flotilla of canoes will launch from the South Brisbane Sailing Club,
Hill End Tce, Orleigh Park, West End at 10:30am, following a briefing
session on safety.

Canoeists will return from the water to the same location at 11:30am.
The event will conclude with further speeches, poetry, musical
entertainment and the launch of the ‘For the Love of Mary’ CD, with all
proceeds going towards the Save the Mary River campaign.

Speakers will include:

Rick Elliot, Chairman, Save the Mary River Coordinating Group

Alan Sheriden, Save the Mary River Group

Juanita Wheeler, Lead Spokesperson & Candidate for Mt Coot-tha, The Greens

Jerry Coleby Williams, Executive Member of QCC & Presenter, co-founder
