*QLD GREENS MEDIA RELEASE*
*Friday 1^st September 2006*
*Greens will not recommend preferences in 69 of the 89 seats*

The Greens have decided to not recommend preferences in 69 of the 89
seats in the forthcoming election, instead recommending that voters use
their informed judgment to allocate preferences as they see fit.

The Greens are recommending voters direct their second preference to
independent candidates in seven seats, with preferences to eventually
flow to the Labor party in three of these seats.

The Greens will recommend direct preferences to the Labor party in 13
seats - Cairns, Chatsworth, Clayfield, Cook, Hervey Bay, Indooroopilly,
Maroochydore, Mount Ommaney, Toowoomba North, Kurwongbah, Woodridge,
Keppel and Mt Gravatt.
Greens lead spokesperson Juanita Wheeler said the party had negotiated
with the ALP on a number of issues. We were particularly impressed with
the ALP’s promises to consult with all landowners, including traditional
owners in Cape York, about the declaration of all rivers in the Cape
under the /Wild Rivers Act /as well as other rivers in the state.

Labor also committed to provide funding for management; including
employment and training programs in particular to aboriginal people in
that role, particularly in the Gulf and on Cape York Peninsula.

They also committed to the continuation of declaring wild rivers
following the end of the current moratorium and within a 100 day period
of the moratorium conclusion.

Ms Wheeler said the Greens were concerned a Coalition Government would
reverse several hard-won environmental gains like landclearing laws and
the Wild Rivers legislation.

“We are unhappy with both Labor and Coalition on a range of
environmental policies, especially rivers and water, but we acknowledge
that, with its current policy frameworks, and with the Liberals
accepting Nationals dominance in much environmental policy, a Coalition
government would be a disaster,” Ms Wheeler said.
