*Greens call for legalised euthanasia*
The Greens have today called for legislation to be introduced to the
Queensland Parliament to legalise euthanasia.
Greens lead spokesperson, Juanita Wheeler said the time had come for the
law to reflect the will of Queenslanders, the majority of whom believe
they have a right to die with dignity, rather than remaining in
prolonged pain because the option is withheld from them.
“It would be a humane and civilising piece of legislation that is long
overdue in the Queensland parliament,” Ms Wheeler said.
The Greens have a long history of supporting legalised euthanasia within
a very tight set of circumstances.
“Where people are incurably ill, they are suffering unbearable pain,
they have received a second medical opinion and have made an informed
decision along with their family, then they should have this option
available to them.
Ms Wheeler said this was an issue that affects all Queenslanders.
“We are all going to die. Many of us have witnessed loved ones endure
months of prolonged suffering despite living in the age of modern
medicine, and we don’t want it for our loved ones or ourselves.”
The Greens are calling on all parties and candidates to declare their
position on legalised euthanasia before the 9 September poll.
