Greens ready to take on rural role

The Greens are the logical replacement for the Nationals in protecting
rural interests, Greens leader Bob Brown said in Queensland today.

Senator Brown is campaigning against dams on the Mary and Logan rivers,
which the Beattie government has announced to supply urban Brisbane.

"Flooding prime food production land at a time when the world is moving
into an era of food shortages defies common sense. Displacing family
farms when better alternatives for meeting urban water requirements are
available also defies common sense," Senator Brown said.

"Increasingly the coalition and National parties have come to serve big
business at the expense of the family farms and small towns."

"Unlike all the big parties, the Greens have opposed the sale of Telstra
and are now opposing the sale of Snowy Hydro. We are also much more
committed to properly funding public education and health services in
rural and regional Australia," Senator Brown said.
