Greens Education spokesperson backs inclusive early learning materials

Greens Education Spokesperson, Senator Kerry Nettle, today congratulated
Marrickville Council for their use of education material that supports
the diversity of different types of families that exist in our
community.

"The Greens support the decision of the NSW government to endorse these
materials which are about positive messages that reflect the reality of
many families in our community," Senator Nettle said.

"These books are not about sex education they are about learning about
the diversity of families that make up out communities.

"A fundamental aspect of early childhood education has always been
learning about your surroundings.

"Modern Australia includes same sex parents, disabled parents, parents
from various different cultures and it is important that education
materials reflect that.

"The knee jerk reaction to this sensationalist reporting by Federal and
State politicians from both the ALP and Coalition has shown a dangerous
willingness to pander to homophobia and must be condemned.

"The happy reality is that the overwhelming majority of parents support
these materials and they will continue to be used."
