Marrickville Council childcare diversity program provides lead for other councils
Greens MP and education and gay and lesbian spokesperson Lee Rhiannon today congratulated Marrickville Council for its inclusive childcare curriculum on family diversity and called on other local councils to follow Marrickvilles lead.
Marrickville Council has a range of policies and programs to encourage understanding and inclusion and to help create healthy attitudes in our community, Ms Rhiannon said.
This is an excellent example of a high quality program that brings social justice to education.
Pre-school programs are designed to help children understand the world they live in, so clearly this program is needed.
Our community is made up of diverse families and children should have the opportunity to know about this reality.
For those pre-schoolers whose parents are gay, lesbian or transgender this is an important program. It creates a learning environment that embraces diversity.
Who a person chooses to love should be respected as much as a persons religion, race or any other point of difference, Ms Rhiannon said.
