Greens WA Giz Watson MLC MEDIA RELEASE
=======================================
Fri 26 May 06
Greens WA MLC Giz Watson has welcomed the Nuclear Energy debate that continues to drench the media this week. "Australians have been reminded of the consequences of uranium mining, and that can only be a good thing," she said.
"Along with environment groups such as The Australian Conservation Foundation, the Conservation Council of WA, The Wilderness Society, and others, The Greens (WA) reconfirms its opposition to uranium mining, enrichment, and waste dumping in Australia," Ms Watson said.
"In response to the Prime Minister's call for a national debate I'd like to remind him of the recent response from environment groups across Australia:
The Australian non-government environment sector is united in its opposition to all aspects of the nuclear industry including uranium mining, uranium enrichment, nuclear power, nuclear weapons and the creation and disposal of radioactive waste. Joint Australian Environment Groups' communiqué on the nuclear industry
and climate change (8 May, 2006)
Ms Watson says she is encouraged by the support from grass roots organisations and people across Australia. "People around the country are coming together again in support of an intelligent response to climate change. There is no place in Australia's energy future for nuclear power."
Ms Watson praised Premier Carpenter for standing firm on the issue, and urged him to pass legislation outlawing uranium mining as soon as possible.
