Snowy sale - Stanhope silent?

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey repeated her call for ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope to make a submission to the NSW inquiry on the sale of the Snowy Hydro, and offered to give him a lift to the Cooma rally on June 4. 

"I believe that there are a number of issues, from an ACT perspective, which should be taken into account by the NSW inquiry, and that the ACT Chief Minister would be best placed to put" Dr Foskey said today.

"If the Snowy Hydro falls into private hands there will be less government control over environmental flows in the Murrumbidgee River." 

"We need Mr Stanhope to make the point that there has to be high water quality and best practice catchment management of the Murrumbidgee." 

"I would also like support from Chief Minister Jon Stanhope in raising the threat of climate change."

"Research findings from CSIRO hydrologist, Albert van Dijk, were reported in the Canberra Times on 24 May. They suggest the Murrumbidgee is facing a 50% drop in water levels."

"The Corporation, privatised or not, has a role with Governments in alleviating climate change impacts on the river systems. This is clearly an issue on which a cross-jurisdictional approach is needed, and which our Chief Minister can drive" Dr Foskey said.

A coalition of concerned community groups, farmers, environmentalists, irrigators and individuals is organising rallies in Cooma, Jindabyne and Sydney over the next two weeks in opposition to the NSW Government's proposed sale. Dr Foskey will be attending the Cooma rally on June 4, and has offered Mr Stanhope a lift. The rally starts at noon in Centennial Park; the organiser is Vicky Wallace, ph: 6456 6725.
