Public transport boost only solution to traffic gridlock
The traffic gridlock that brought much of Sydney to a standstill this
morning highlights that the NSW government must scrap its pro-motorway
policy and fast track public transport upgrades Greens MP and transport
spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said today.
If the state government is serious about reliable and safe travel
Premier Iemma must ensure that the coming budget includes a funding
boost to heavy and light rail and bus services, Ms Rhiannon said.
Todays Sydney Harbour Bridge accident highlights that this city
has become too reliant on car travel for workers and visitors coming
into the CBD.
But for many people they have no viable option but to use cars as
public transport is not reliable.
Accidents will continue to happen, particularly in the morning and
evening peak periods, while Sydneys roads are clogged with traffic.
Sydneys reputation is being damaged by the governments go slow
on public transport upgrades.
The Greens have called on the Premier to override the advice of his
own Transport Minister and promote light rail services for the city.
Last week Minister Watkins rejected light rail services * a move
that suggests he does not understand how to manage an integrated
transport network.
World class public transport services is the only way to reduce car
dependency in Sydney, Ms Rhiannon said.
