Snowy Hydro: Greens leader backs Heffernan

Greens leader Bob Brown, long-term foe of powerful Liberal Senator Bill
Heffernan, says Senator Heffernan is right in describing the sale of
Snowy Hydro as a "national disgrace".

"Bill Heffernan's rural background means he is more alert to the danger
of city-based financial institutions taking over Australia's prime water
resources," Senator Brown said.

"The profit motive is not going to give the best outcome when there are
serious social and environmental considerations."

"The water that flows off the Snowy Mountains is a national asset and
should remain in public hands. It is being flogged off for no good
reason but to help fix the NSW Iemma Government's financial woes."

"The best outcome would be for the Commonwealth to take over Snowy
Hydro," Senator Brown said.
