Howard has decided to create a nuclear Australia, and wedge Labor -
Brown
The Prime Minister, John Howard, has decided to create a nuclear
Australia, Greens leader Bob Brown said today.
"This is an arrogant, in-your-face decision with no mandate from the
Australian voters," Senator Brown said.
"His call for a public debate is a sham. He's made up his mind. He
controls the Senate. Australia is being catapulted into an age of
nuclear reactors, waste dumping and weaponry because of money and
corporate greed. It has all to do with making money from uranium and
zilch to do with defending us from global warming," Senator Brown said.
"John Howard is in Canada to promote uranium mining, while back home he
has defunded solar energy research. The government's support for the
coal industry comes at the expense of the renewable energy industry,
which has condemned the government's refusal to extend the mandatory
renewable energy target," Senator Brown said.
"The Greens will mount a vigorous campaign against turning Australia
into a combined nuclear mine and waste dump."
"But you can't help seeing that Mr Howard's announcement is to wedge
Labor on its way to next year's federal election. Labor is about to
suffer nuclear fission," Senator Brown said.
