RACE IS ON FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY TARGETS.

Greens (WA) congratulate Victoria on commitment to developing energy
target legislation.

Greens MLC Paul Llewellyn today stepped up the pressure on the
Carpenter government to introduce renewable energy targets in Western
Australia.
 
 "The Greens have a Bill before Parliament right now that will
deliver a realistic target and pump 20% renewable energy into the South
West grid by 2020 and this bill has been sitting on the table for over
six months," he said. 

"When is the government going to put its money where its mouth is and
commit to renewable energy target legislation?" asked Mr Llewellyn.

Congratulating the Victorian government on its commitment to a 10%
target by 2010, Mr Llewellyn said Western Australia would have no
difficulty achieving 20% by 2020 and could be the first state to commit
to targets if the Labor government was willing to act sooner.  

"Western Australia could be Australia's leader in renewable energy.
We have the know-how to establish a whole new industry. Over $160
million of renewable energy projects are ready to go.  

"The Victorian government is expected to sign off on its draft policy
within weeks and legislation could be introduced as early as July.

"WA is falling behind with its greenhouse targets. We owe it to this
and future generations to set specific, measurable actions now to meet
our greenhouse targets, reduce our energy and air pollution outputs and
create a clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy future,"
concluded Mr Llewellyn.
