ACT Gvt. insincere on environment

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey questioned the ACT Government's commitment to its environmental promises, after it opposed her move in the Assembly to give stamp duty concessions for low emission cars.

"For over two years the ACT Government has promised to 'encourage the use of more resource?efficient and low emission private motor vehicles through regulation and pricing of vehicle registration, and reduction in stamp duty'" Dr Foskey said today.

"Yesterday the Chief Minister opposed my amendments to the Duties Act, allowing concessions to low emission cars, with the argument that he had no evidence the scheme would work and no analysis had been done to date."

"It appears that the ACT Government has done absolutely nothing over the past two years towards keeping its promise."

"It seems that the environment and sustainability are pulled out at election time and forgotten afterwards."

"Canberra has the largest ecological footprint per capita in Australia, and consequently, we are among the world's biggest resource users. It's time Mr Stanhope paid attention to his own rhetoric about Climate Change and took his promises to protect the environment seriously" Dr Foskey said.
