Brown calls for Antarctica World Park
Greens Leader Bob Brown has called on the Howard Government to take a
lead in advocating the protection of Antarctica and its seas as a World
Park.
"Through the Antarctic Treaty Committee, Australia should pursue
nomination of Antarctica for the World Heritage List where it would be a
premier site. Antarctica is the world's last great continent and,
together with its wildlife, should be protected.
"This is a test for the whole world not just Australia. In an age of
materialism which is rapidly destroying the world's forests, oceans and
wildlife, keeping our bulldozers of exploitation out of Antarctica is a
fundamental test for us 6 billion human beings," Senator Brown said
today.
"Senator Barnaby Joyce has got it wrong. 'Sustainable development' is a
non sequitur when it comes to Antarctica. He has gone to the cathedral
and seen only the gold," Senator Brown said.
Senator Brown's comments are a response to the ABC's Australian Story
program on Senator Joyce's trip to Antarctica.
