*Greens launch ‘solar on every roof’ initiative today*

The Greens will launch their ‘solar on every roof’ initiative this
morning at Brisbane’s sustainable house in Wynnum.

The Greens advocate a target of ‘solar on every roof’ as a way of
increasing the security of the supply of electricity and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions.
Greens lead spokesperson, Juanita Wheeler, said Queensland should be
leading the way in innovate solar technology.
“Queensland is the sunshine state, where massive amounts of solar energy
beats down on bare tiles and iron roofs, when it could be beating down
on solar panels,” Ms Wheeler said.
“With ‘solar on every roof’, the electricity meters will be spinning
backwards as solar panels generate clean and green electricity, helping
to take the load off the coal and gas fired power stations that
currently meet most of our demand.”

The key to the Greens initiative is to fund solar energy at the
household level by allowing infrastructure costs to be paid for through
quarterly energy bills over the life of the panels.

“We pay for power stations that way – so why not solar panels as well?”

“Energy companies should also be required to provide a range of
alternative energy options including energy conservation measures, also
to be paid off through power bills over the life of the product.
“With Commonwealth government subsidies for solar panels being reduced,
it is important that the State Government immediately put in place
incentives for people to capture solar energy that is free, limitless
and currently going to waste.”

Local Greens candidate, David Wyatt, who recently returned from a trip
to China where solar panels are in widespread use, will join Juanita
Wheeler at the launch.
