MEDIA RELEASE - 30 August 2006
Multiple cremations: NSW Health should conduct inquiry
Greens MP Lee Rhiannon has called on the NSW Health Minister to conduct an inquiry into allegations of unethical cremation practices she detailed in an adjournment speech to NSW Parliament last night.
A crematorium worker alleged he was forced to conduct multiple cremations and dispose of excess ashes in garbage bins and pre-dug graves, Ms Rhiannon said.
NSW Health must immediately conduct an inquiry into these very serious allegations.
Premier Iemma needs no further evidence that his government should move to protect consumers from unscrupulous operators in the NSW funeral industry.
The government has thumbed its nose at even the mild recommendations of the 2005 NSW Legislative Council Inquiry into the States Funeral Industry.
The Greens renew our calls for a licensing system for funeral operators and an industry ombudsman to manage complaints.
The regulatory system is now inadequate to prevent unscrupulous players from continuing to operate in the industry, Ms Rhiannon said.
