*Beattie Content to See Jobs and Export Income Lost*

Last night's 4 Corners program highlighted in no uncertain terms how the
Queensland premier wants to maintain the state's economy as a twentieth
century backwater.
He specifically rejected carbon emissions trading and supported the
Prime Minister's rejection of the goal of 60 per cent reductions in
carbon emissions by 2050.
Queensland is also spending $300 million on developing the technology
for burying carbon emissions, a technology that might never be perfected
and, furthermore, is twenty years into the future.
Greens state spokesperson Juanita Wheeler described Mr Beattie's
reaction as out of step with directions in modern world industry.
"Peter Beattie wants to keep this state in thrall to dirty, polluting
industries while much of the rest of the world is investing in future
industries," she said.
"This is the Sunshine State with fewer solar hot water systems than most
other states.

“While New South Wales and Victoria have introduced state-based
renewable energy targets, Queensland has no system for requiring minimum
percentages of electricity to be sourced from renewables.

"Queensland should also be signing up with the other states to a carbon
emissions trading scheme that would reduce these emissions and encourage
the development of 21st century industries.

"We have a significant competitive advantage in such areas as geothermal
and solar, not just coal and we should be competing with the most
advanced economies in the world not just racing to the bottom with the
rest of the resource extraction, last century ones," Ms Wheeler said.
