Come clean on Burrup vandalism
Saturday, 26 August 2006
Greens Senator Rachel Siewert has called on the State Government to come
clean on whether it plans to allow Woodside to destroy more of the
priceless rock art on the Burrup Peninsula in the Pilbara.
"How much of the rock art is Woodside seeking to move or destroy? Will
the State Government stick to its commitment to protect sites on the
Burrup, or will we see an escalation of the vandalism of the past?"
On June 25, 2006, Minister John Bowler said in a 60 Minutes interview
"Any future expansion of the Burrup will not disturb the Art Galleries".
Despite this, Woodside is seeking approval to destroy or remove more of
the artworks on the site of the proposed Pluto development.
"These applications should have been rejected out of hand. I want to
know whether the Indigenous Affairs Minister Sheila McHale is seriously
contemplating another round of destruction on the Burrup, or if she
intends to stick up for the heritage responsibilities she is entrusted
with," Senator Siewert said.
