Greens outraged at Lungfish Report Destruction*
The Greens today expressed outrage at reports the Beattie government had
ordered the shredding of studies into the lungfish and other endangered
species in the Mary River.
The proposed Traveston Dam on the Mary River is likely to have a heavy
impact on endangered species like the lungfish, the Mary River cod, the
Mary River turtle and the giant barred frog. This could cause the dam to
be scrapped under Commonwealth environmental legislation.
One of the world’s foremost authorities on the lungfish, Dr Jean Joss,
has stated publicly that she has been told by a Department of Primary
Industries officer that they have been ordered to shred the report.
Queensland Greens lead spokesperson Juanita Wheeler said she was shocked
at this report and said it was potentially an illegal order under the
Commonwealth/ Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999./
“Dr Joss is an eminent scientist and would not be making such a
statement if she wasn’t sure of her facts,” Ms Wheeler said.
“The CMC should investigate this immediately. The Beattie government has
a long record of avoiding giving information to the public but this goes
way beyond that.”
The last major shredding incident in Queensland was the shredding of
documents from the Heiner inquiry in the early years of the Goss
government, an act which is still having reverberations in Queensland
political life.
Ms Wheeler will be at the site of the proposed Traveston Dam today.
