Climate change film a call to action
Australian Greens Senator Christine Milne will introduce a preview of Al
Gore's dramatic climate change film, An Inconvenient Truth, in Hobart
next month*.
Senator Milne, the Australian Greens climate change and energy
spokesperson, said the film by former US Vice-President Al Gore was a
graphic portrayal of how humans have disrupted Earth's climate systems
and the devastating impacts which have resulted.
"Al Gore's film speaks directly to every one of us about the urgency of
addressing climate change," Senator Milne said in Hobart.
"The evidence is overwhelming - the oceans are warming and becoming more
acidic, glaciers are retreating, and polar bears are drowning as the
distance between ice floes grows.
"In Australia, many cities are on water restrictions, farmers and rural
communities are battling drought, warmer sea waters bring invasive
species that threaten marine life, and the change to seasonal patterns
is affecting agriculture.
"Tasmania is not immune. In just one example, the sea urchin, which can
now survive in the warmer oceans of Tasmania's east coast, is destroying
the giant kelp beds, habitat for the abalone and rock lobster fisheries.
"Climate change is truly a global challenge but responding to it starts
with each one of us. This film should motivate everyone to act. I'll be
urging Prime Minister John Howard and his ministers to see it."
