Greens push Renewable Energy Targets at
State Energy Conference

Government must support renewable energy sector, says Greens WA

At the ‘Energy in Western Australia’ Conference in Perth today Southwest Greens MLC Paul Llewellyn called on the government to support the state’s renewable energy sector by committing to renewable energy targets.

Launching a flyer to promote his private members bill - A Renewable Energy Target for Western Australia, Mr Llewellyn said,
“It’s hard to believe our government isn’t showcasing our renewable energy technologies at this conference. Instead the conference is dominated by our air-polluting power industry which comes with a significant carbon tax liability.”

“The renewable energy sector is a proven performer and will offset our future carbon tax obligations. We need cost-effective renewable energy targets now that will grow our renewable energy sector,” he said. “My private members bill has been designed to do just that and will provide certainty for investors in the industry. Without that certainty our smart technology industries will go interstate and overseas and with them will go the jobs.

Mr Llewellyn said the renewable energy target would attract over $2 billion investment in renewable energy to meet the proposed 20% by 2020 target.
