Bring on Electric cars - Greens

Trial and register fuel-saving electric cars,

The revolutionary Reva electric car has been approved for use in UK, and Japan meeting stringent safety standards, but in Australia the Federal Department of Transport and Region Services is sitting on its hands and blocking its certification according to Greens MLC for the South West Paul Llewellyn.

“As the price of fuel skyrockets we should be looking at every possible way to help make transport more energy efficient, environmentally friendly and cheaper for Australian families,” Mr Llewellyn says.

“The 2 adult 2 children Reva has a range of 80 -100 Km and costs less than $1 to recharge using mains electricity. They are quiet, they produce no tail-pipe emissions, and they could be ideal for city and suburban commuters.

“This car needs to be promptly assessed and certified for use on Australian roads as part of a wider plan to reduce our dependence on oil while reducing greenhouse gas emissions” Mr Llewellyn said.

“Electric cars use less than a third of the energy of an equivalent internal combustion engine vehicle.

“Even when the electricity is being generated with old-fashioned, coal-fired power plants electric cars can cut total emissions by as much as half compared to internal combustion engines”.

“If powered by electricity produced from renewable sources such as wind, biomass, electric vehicles could be part of a revolution in clean safe industries”.
