QLD GREENS MEDIA RELEASE

Tuesday 15th August 2006
Greens welcome real election debate on challenges and solutions

The Greens have welcomed today’s announcement of the 9^th September
general election, ending the speculation over when the election would fall.

Greens state election spokesperson, Juanita Wheeler, expressed
frustration that for all the major crises facing Queensland, speculation
of when the election could and would fall had been dominating recent
political debate.

“While the state is facing major challenges on issues such as water,
health and uranium mining, the big question in the mind of the Premier
has been what election date maximises his chance of getting re-elected,”
Ms Wheeler said.

Ms Wheeler said while the Greens look forward to the election, and the
voters chance to have their say, they also look forward to the day when
fixed term elections are introduced to Queensland, a feature of the
Greens election platform.

“The Greens look forward to the day where the pre-election farce
surrounding potential election dates is replaced with serious debate
about the big challenges and real solutions for the people of
Queensland,” Ms Wheeler said.
