 Media release

 14th August 2006

The same superannuation rules should apply to everyone, including politicians, says Greens MLC Mark Parnell, in response to the call by Labor MP Tom Kenyon for an increase in government-funded superannuation to 15% for all SA Members of Parliament.

"Yes, there is certainly an issue of equity - with some MPs getting more super than others - but the solution is for the MPs currently on 15% to drop down to 9%, not the other way around", said Mr Parnell.

"If 9% is good enough for every other South Australian citizen, then it should be good enough for MPs.

"There is no acceptable argument for MPs to be made a special case", he said.

The same superannuation rules should also include the opportunity for MPs (and public servants) to be able to choose an ethical superannuation option. Approximately half of South Australia's employees have a choice of superannuation options, while public servants and state MPs must keep their money with Super SA.

"In June, I asked the Treasurer why Super SA wasn't even prepared to ask its members whether they would like an ethical superannuation option. I'm still waiting a reply.

"I want my superannuation to be used for the good of society, not paying for the salaries of big tobacco executives or for uranium enrichment", said Mr Parnell.
