Pacific Highway proposal dangerous: Greens
Greens MP and transport spokesperson Lee Rhiannon has labelled the
proposal to expand the Pacific Highway with a combination of private
tolls, shadow tolls and public money as practically, environmentally,
and financially unsafe.
"This proposal is all about putting more trucks on roads which
increases the risk of serious road accidents from overworked long
distance freight haulers." Ms Rhiannon said.
"The Government should rethink this idea and invest in public
railways to make our communities safer, quieter and cleaner.
"An expanded Pacific Highway means more bulldozers, blasting and
concrete - and that's a backward step for our fragile coastal
environments.
"The Government should end its love affair with private sector
partnerships and take responsibility for state investment.
"The Greens support safe roads, not big roads - this latest proposal
is a recipe for disaster."
"Trains are the way to go: I challenge the NSW roads Minister Michael
Costa to try and catch one," Ms Rhiannon said.
