The lecture

In 2003, a senior UN official predicted the rise of a new superpower -
the people. There is a growing sense of readiness to co-operate in a
mass movement for sweeping social change. How can those committed to
progressive politics turn the anti-war and anti-globalisation movements
into a genuine and long lasting force to be reckoned with?

About Jo Vallentine
Jo was the first Green in the Australian Senate. She was first elected
as a WA Senator in 1984 on an anti-nuclear platform. Since leaving
parliament in 1992, Jo has continued to work in community groups on
justice, disarmament and environmental issues. Jo is a Quaker, committed
to non-violence and passionate about her involvement in social change
movements.

The Juanita Nielsen Memorial Lecture Series
Juanita Nielsen was publisher of the independent paper "Now" and active
campaigner against high-rise development in Kings Cross, who disappeared
in July 1975. Her murderers were never brought to justice. The
investigation was reopened last year. The circumstances of her
disappearance remain unresolved but it is commonly believed that she was
murdered because of her stand for the environment and the rights of low
income residents.
