Beazley needs to clarify Labor's position on uranium: Greens
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today criticised Labor's resource spokesman
Martin Ferguson's support of an expansion of uranium mining, calling on
Kim Beazley to clarify exactly what Labor's uranium policy is.
"It is clear the debate in Labor on uranium is being pushed in the
direction of backing an expansion of uranium mining", Senator Nettle
said today.
"Martin Ferguson's interpretation of Labor's uranium policy would mean
Labor could support four mines, ten mines or even twenty uranium mines."
"Labor voters will feel abandoned if Martin Ferguson's push for more
mines is adopted."
"Kim Beazley needs to make clear what Labor's position is. Will he
support further uranium mining beyond the existing three mines or will
he back the community who want to see uranium mining end.
"While the rest of the industrialised world is phasing out nuclear
power, an expansion of uranium exports to China from Australia will fuel
the development of a dangerous and unsustainable nuclear industry in
China."
"There is no guarantee this uranium won't end up in China's nuclear
weapons program."
The Greens want an end to all uranium mining in Australia and a closure
of Australia's only nuclear reactor in Sydney.
