Loss of uni services will hit bush hard
Greens Senator Kerry Nettle today condemned federal government plans to
ban compulsory student services fees identifying regional and rural
campuses and communities as those who will be hit hardest.
"Student Associations provide thousands of jobs, millions of dollars and
invaluable services to regional and rural communities that will be lost
if the government's anti-student association legislation is passed,"
Senator Nettle said.
"I expect that Dr Nelson's colleagues who represent the regional
communities, which are so well served by their local student
associations, will not be impressed by this attack on local jobs and
services.
"I have visited most regional universities in Australia and know that
the services the student associations provide play a vital role
strengthening the local community.
"University education should be a well rounded cultural experience which
allows for sporting, artistic, political and social participation not
simply attending lectures. This legislation is an attack on educational
standards and a threat to the quality of Australian universities'
reputation.
"The Greens will be opposing the legislation along with the students,
teachers, their union, the Vice Chancellors, the Group of Eight, the
States, and the local communities that will be affected."
