ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey Media Release

2 March 2005

==========
Pine problem confirmed
==========

ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey has congratulated the ACT Government for putting a stop to the replanting of pines in the Cotter catchment.

 "I've been calling for the Government to take a more sophisticated approach to catchment management since the election campaign last year and raised the issue as a matter of public importance in the Assembly last month" Dr Foskey said.

"I also put a question on notice to the government asking if we could see if the insurance policy stipulated the replanting of pines, or whether other replanting would be acceptable. I look forward to the government's response."

"I was pleased to see this morning that the ACT Government has now caught up with the best environmental thinking, remembering too that the pines have never yet brought in an economic return."

"We've seen government use old thinking about replanting - that what was there must go back - rather than take account of the best scientific advice. I'm pleased that this time public and scientific debate have made a difference."

"I look forward to seeing the plans for an ecologically and environmentally more thoughtful re-planting" Dr Foskey said.
