Greens call on Iemma to set the date for Marrickville by-election
Morris Iemma should stop playing sneaky games and reveal the date of the
Marrickville, Maroubra and Macquarie Fields by-elections, The Greens
candidate for Marrickville Sam Byrne said today.
"Despite constant media speculation about September 17 as polling day, the
State Electoral Office has confirmed that there is still no official date
so it's starting to look as though Premier Iemma is scared of going to the
polls," Mr Byrne said.
"The only other explanation is that he wants to give the people of these
electorates and their alternative candidates as little notice as possible
of the election date.
"The Greens are mounting a serious challenge for the seat of Marrickville.
It's clear that the Labor party is under threat from its poor handling of
public transport and public health, from being too close to big developers
and for unsustainable strategies such as its white elephant desalination plant.
"The by-election is a chance for progressive voters to send a message to
the State Government.
"The poor showing for the Labor government in the weekend by-elections in
Queensland is a bad omen for the Labor government in NSW.
"But delaying the inevitable for a few days or weeks is not going to help a
floundering government. The public has lost confidence in the Labor party
and Morris Iemma knows it.
"The people of Marrickville have a right to elect a new MP as soon as
possible," Mr Byrne said.
