Wheezing and sneezing in the Cross City Tunnel?


The Government needs to come clean about whether or not it can guarantee the air quality in the cross city tunnel, Greens MP and roads spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said today.

"People have a right to know how many fans are faulty and where they are located, and what safeguards will be place in case they fail once the tunnel is open." said Ms Rhiannon.

"Will the government tell us what the minimum number of fans needed is to guarantee the safety of people who are travelling in the tunnel.

"Motorists will be depending on these fans for the air they breathe during their 2 minute run through the tunnel. They deserve the whole truth about what is going wrong.

"The stories about people being overcome with fumes in the M5 East tunnel must be ringing in new Roads Minister Joe Tripodi's ears. 

"From traffic congestion to breathing congestion, the cross city tunnel remains shrouded in problems and delays.

"Clean air is at the heart of the Greens' push for a robust public transport system that allows people to leave their car at home," said Ms Rhiannon.
