ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey Media Release
Wed 17 Aug 2005
=====================
Civic plans need help!
ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey will move a motion in the Assembly today welcoming the enthusiasm for City Hill development in Civic, and calling for the ACT Government to ensure that all the plans and ideas are on the table.
"This is a once in a life time opportunity for the Canberra community and the relevant authorities to get behind a new step forward for Civic, Canberra's city centre" Dr Foskey said today.
"For this process to work it really needs everyone behind it. That means we need to think about how City Hill links to West Civic and the ANU, where development is already happening, and to Constitution Ave and West Basin, where the NCA has very big plans."
"We would like the National Capital Authority's detailed plans be made publicly available, as they are likely to be highly influential to the final result. If some of Tom Snow's Living Canberra ideas, for example, have already been ruled out by the NCA, then we all ought to know it."
"The key to a successful vision is that everyone who has a stake in Civic can be involved. That means that we need to think about the arts, community services, and people of all ages. We also have to think about how such massive change will influence the plants and animals that are such a valued part of our city."
"My motion in the Assembly today calls for profound community consultation process that engages with people and their ideas before the decisions have been made. If we are going to embark on a twenty or thirty year project that will change the shape of Civic we need to get it right."
"The motion also calls for Government to ensure that key funding questions are dealt with transparently. Much is made of the proposed developments being self-funding. But if government isn't actually putting up the money it can find itself putting up the land. And the cost to the community, eventually, is much the same" Dr Foskey said.
