ACT GREENS MLA DEB FOSKEY MEDIA RELEASE
Monday, 15 August 2005
=========
The long road to Reconciliation
ACT Greens MLA Deb Foskey this morning joined the first leg of a special journey of reconciliation from Parliament House in Canberra to Uluru, led by Dominican Friar, Father Peter Murnane.
"Father Peter Murnane is describing this bicyle ride as a call for us to reflect on Aboriginal displacement, on the stolen generations, and on the ongoing disadvantage that Indigenous people endure" Dr Foskey said today.
"I was pleased to be able to join Father Murnane and the six other riders accompanying him on the first step of their 2700 kilometre ride."
"I believe the status and well being of Indigenous people in this country is really what defines us as a nation."
"I wish the riders well and congratulate them for their pilgrimage. It draws our attention to our need to develop an inclusive culture which is built on the relationship between Indigenous and other Australians."
I am please that the riders made their first stop the Tent Embassy since it tries to represent national indigenous issues, and that they are carrying ashes from the Embassy's fire" Dr Foskey said.
