Greens introduce Food Labelling Legislation

Greens Senator Bob Brown today introduced legislation for proper
labelling of food.

"The bill will require that all packaged and un packaged food placed on
the market in Australia must have a label identifying its country of
origin," Senator Brown said.

"Each Coalition and Labor Senator and MP now has an opportunity to stand
up and support the farmers protesting at parliament today.

"In 1998 when I moved amendments to the 'Made in Australia' legislation
in going through the parliament, not one Labor or Coalition Senator
supported my move to make 'Made in Australia' labelling mean just that -
100% made in Australia.

"If  the Government is serious about supporting farmers it should give
speedy passage this legislation," Senator Brown said.
