Tarkine Starts the New Senate
Greens Senator Bob Brown will start the new Senate session with a motion
recommending Tasmania's Tarkine rainforest be nominated for World
Heritage status - The Tarkine is the largest temperate rainforest in
Australia.
Senator Brown said the Tarkine wilderness should be linked to the
existing Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area at Cradle Mountain
providing a natural and protected corridor from Cradle Mountain to the
wild west coast.
"The Tarkine has huge potential for Tasmania's global image and,
therefore, jobs and the economy," Senator Brown said.
The motion reads:
That the Senate calls on the Government to investigate the potential for
a World Heritage nomination for Tasmania's Tarkine wilderness.
The motion is due to be put to the Senate at approximately 3.30pm
